Tinatin Tkesheliadze Wins Best Poster Award at DanScatt 2025

Congratulations to Tinatin Tkesheliadze on receiving the Best Poster Award at the DanScatt Annual Meeting 2025!

Tinatin presented her poster titled “Phosphate Recovery from Arsenic-laden Groundwater Treatment Sludge”, which is part of her Independent Research Fund Denmark-funded PhD project. Her work builds on previous research on arsenic upcycling, but focuses on recovering phosphate as calcium phosphate (Ca-P) from arsenic-containing groundwater treatment sludge. Using a variety of sludge samples from Denmark, she optimized conditions to achieve >80% phosphate recovery from a waste stream that is traditionally landfilled.

The structure of the recovered Ca-P solids was probed using pair distribution function analysis of high-energy X-ray scattering data collected at DESY, which revealed that arsenic is incorporated in the Ca-P solids.

Her recognition highlights the growing interest in applying X-ray-based techniques for structural characterization of environmental samples among the Danish research community.
